As I was preparing for a 105 degree day with friends at a theme park, a very caring soul asked me if I needed powder in my shorts. I froze, refrained from looking for my other flip flop and stood there with my mouth hanging open. The camper filled with a deafening silence. I had never been asked this particular question, and needed a minute to process what was being asked of me. I had never put powder in my shorts, so why would I do it now? I must say I was intrigued, and it did strike me as a very proactive thing to do when preparing to walk all day in the heat. Why had this idea never come up before? Why hadn’t my mother suggested this before I went outside to play dodgeball in the heat of the day? Why had I sufferred needlessly all these years? The logical side of me thought this was such a wonderful idea. Powder is designed to absorb, and there would certainly be a need for that on such a balmy day. It was brilliant and in that particular instance, definitely a logical solution to our problem. It made perfect sense, and so, he put powder in his shorts, and I did not.

Why? Because it was unfamiliar to me, out of my comfort zone and, although I did determine it was a great idea for someone else, I was not ready to try it myself. I wanted to see how his day went first. I needed to see it work. I was chicken, as if powder in your shorts could somehow cause illness or death. Yet, at the end of the day, I can concur that he had smiled throughout the day as I walked beside him, grunting and groaning in my sweaty clothes. He had taken the plunge and was happy and content, and I was stuck in my sweaty clothes, just like the day before, and the day before.

When someone loses their job, their first reaction is to find another job. This is what most people do, it is the norm and it’s just what we know. Now “back in the day” this was certainly a viable solution. I remember the days when you could decide where you would like to work, and then actually get a job there. I remember getting a job offer for every single interview that I attended. Those days are long behind us. IF you are lucky enough for someone to respond that they even received your resume, and IF they offer you an interview, and IF you do well on the next 3 interviews with that same company, AND IF they offer you a job after all of that….you most likely will accept the position, even if pay, location and actual job are nowhere near what you aspire to be. And guess what? You will find yourself in a job you don’t like, looking for yet another job.

It’s time to try something new, think outside the box, and follow the few brave others who have successfully stepped out on their own! They didn’t just settle with “working for the man,” they became “the man.” Isn’t it time you changed your way of thinking and realized you too have what it takes to be an entrepreneur yourself? It’s time for a new solution to a very old problem, and it is the way of the future. Now I can’t say I would put powder in my shorts every day going forward, but I feel more confident after seeing it work for someone else and I’m definitely on board for the next day of exercise on a hot summer day. We can learn a lot from cats. Cats are like entrepreneurs. They set the rules and lay the groundwork and have us catering to them!
